Plunge

1997; granite, steel, earth; 7’H x 46’ diameter; Frey Science and Engineering Building, University of St. Thomas; St. Paul, MN

This piece was inspired by patterns and systems found in nature, instruments used to investigate scientific phenomena as well as cultural mythologies of the universe.  While not illustrative of a particular scientific concept or area of study, in looking at the piece one might consider the fields of engineering, geometry, astronomy and physics.  Penetrating 3’ into the ground, the piece also creates a dynamic focal point from the upper floors of the adjacent science towers.
