Passage

1998; stainless steel, granite, cast concrete; 24’H x 35’W x 35’D; Anoka Ramsey Community College, Coon Rapids, MN.  Commissioned by the Minnesota Percent for Art in Public Places program.

Sited along the Mississippi River, the work suggests a journey in the process of learning.  Three stainless steel boats with a granite nucleus are oriented upstream while three oars, with the blade of each, penetrate the center of an open book form.  These three books symbolize the three basic bodies of knowledge: the natural sciences, the social sciences and the humanities.  In close proximity to student activity areas, the installation creates a place for gathering and seating.
