2004; stone, wood, bronze, text, prairie grasses; 5’6”H x 116’W x 55’D; Hiawatha Light Rail, VA Medical Station; Minneapolis, MN. Commissioned by the Metropolitan Council.
Responding to the history of the area, the geology of the Mississippi River and the present context of the V.A. Medical Center, this piece references time, place and memory through the use of sculptural form, text and materials. On the layers of stone a quote from Fujiwara no Kintō reads: “The waterfall’s sound faded into nothingness a long time ago.” A quote from Bashō, in bronze letters on the bench, reads: “Summer grasses where warriors dream.”
